Oasis Painters of Salt Lake City

Interior Painters in South Salt Lake

Looking for interior painters in South Salt Lake who treat your home like it matters? Oasis Painters is based right here on West Temple just south of 2100 South, and interior work is the heart of what we do from late October through April, once exterior season ends and the valley settles into inversion weather.

South Salt Lake is a mixed bag of homes: 1920s to 1950s brick bungalows east of State Street, 1970s ramblers, and a wave of 2015-and-newer townhomes around Central Pointe and The Crossing. Each one asks for different prep and products, and we have worked on all three.

Plaster, Drywall and the Age of Your South Salt Lake Home

Pre-1960 houses around Central Park and the blocks east of State Street usually have plaster walls over wood lath. Plaster is hard and beautifully flat when it is sound, but it cracks along stress lines and pulls away from lath near ceilings. We open hairline cracks, set them with fiberglass mesh and setting compound, skim where needed, and prime so the new color does not flash.

Newer townhomes and the loft conversions along West Temple are drywall, which is simpler but shows every roller mark under daylight from big windows. Builder-grade flat paint also rubs off easily, so the first repaint often means a sealing primer and two full coats rather than a touch-up.

Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint on trim and windows, so we follow lead-safe practices whenever we sand or scrape those surfaces.

Low-VOC Paint, the Right Sheen for Each Room, and Enamel for Trim

We lean on low- and zero-VOC acrylic lines for occupied homes. They dry fast and smell very little, which matters here: winter inversions already trap bad air in the valley, and nobody wants fumes inside a closed-up house in January.

Sheen is where interior painting is won or lost. The guide we use:

  • Bedrooms and ceilings: flat or matte to hide plaster texture and drywall seams.
  • Living rooms and hallways: eggshell or a scrubbable matte that shrugs off fingerprints.
  • Kitchens, baths and laundry rooms: satin for moisture and wipe-downs.
  • Trim, doors and cabinets: a waterborne urethane or alkyd enamel in satin or semi-gloss.

That last line is the one homeowners notice most. Oak cabinets from the 1970s to 1990s and chipped casings in older bungalows come back crisp when they are degreased, scuff-sanded, bonding-primed and sprayed with cabinet-grade enamel, not brushed with wall paint.

Why Winter Is Interior Season in the Salt Lake Valley

Exterior painting along the Wasatch Front realistically runs mid-April through October. Once the first hard freeze lands, usually in the second half of October, interior work takes over our calendar. Winter openings are easier to get, and Utah’s dry indoor air helps paint cure.

We treat your belongings like our own. Furniture is moved to the center of the room and wrapped, floors are covered with drop cloths or rosin paper, and switch plates and hardware come off rather than getting painted around. We tidy up each day so you can still live in the house.

Winter is also when to book spring exterior painting, before the May slots fill.

How Our Interior Painting Process Works

Every interior job follows the same steps so the result is predictable:

  • Consultation. We walk each room, talk colors and sheens, and send a written proposal with the products listed.
  • Protection. Furniture moved and covered, floors protected, hardware removed.
  • Repair. Nail pops, cracks, dents and anchor holes patched and sanded; plaster set and skimmed where needed.
  • Prime. Spot-prime patches; full prime over stains, glossy surfaces or big color changes.
  • Paint. Two coats on walls, cut lines brushed by hand, trim and doors sprayed or brushed with enamel.
  • Walk-through. You check every room in daylight with us before we call it finished.

A typical three-bedroom interior takes a few working days, depending on repairs and the number of colors. Browse recent projects in our work gallery.

Oasis Painters is locally owned and operated — not a franchise. The person who quotes your job is the person who picks up when you call (385) 462-4410. A few reasons neighbors from South Salt Lake to Millcreek keep calling us back:

  • We know plaster, lath and lead-era trim as well as new drywall.
  • Low-VOC products are the default, not an upcharge.
  • Sharp cut lines and sprayed enamel on trim, doors and cabinets.
  • Written proposals with the products named, and no surprise add-ons.
  • Licensed and insured, with a crew that cleans up every day.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Many bungalows and post-war homes in the 84115 area have plaster over lath. We repair cracks with mesh and setting compound, skim rough spots, and prime appropriately before two finish coats.

Satin in most cases. It handles humidity and wipe-downs without the shine of semi-gloss. For a small bath ceiling, a bath-rated matte resists mildew while hiding texture.

Yes, and it is one of our most popular projects in 1970s to 1990s homes. Doors come off and are sprayed in a controlled space; boxes are sprayed in place. Expect a few days on site and gentle use for a week or two while the enamel hardens.

It is our busiest interior season for good reason. Low-VOC paints keep odor minimal with the windows closed, dry indoor air helps curing, and scheduling is more flexible than in summer.

No. Take down pictures and clear small items and breakables, and we handle the rest. We move and cover furniture, protect floors and remove outlet covers. Large pieces stay in the room under plastic.
